Sightings is a series of pinhole photographs that examine social representations of the unknown and unexplainable. Based in landscape imagery, these pictures are stagings of people witnessing mysterious phenomena from UFOs or other unexplainable happenings. Photographic evidence by witnesses of paranormal events generally appears blurry and haphazard, especially the many pixilated “sighting” pictures online. I use the indistinct quality of pinhole photography to mirror the ambiguity of UFO snapshots in the news. I also noticed that these snapshots rarely have people in them, so I placed people in my pictures to further investigate what the confrontation between individual and supernatural may look like.
